Aquaponics is a is a food production system that couples aquaculture with the hydroponics whereby the nutrient-rich aquaculture water is fed to hydroponically grown plants. It is a technique used throughout the world and we are trying to test its viability in the arid regions of Northern Peru.
After we learn more about how to make the Aquaponics systems work efficiently, we plan to use our prototype and facility as an educational space so that local populations can learn how to build and maintain their own aquaponics systems as a means of self-reliance.

These underground greenhouse designs use the earth to hold in heat collected through the sunny day and release the heat through the night. This allows for an accommodating space to grow foods even into the winter months. We are looking to build one on our site in Chelan, WA and use it to grow native tree seedlings to assist in our reforestation projects while we learn more about the Walipini Greenhouse and its viability.
